<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You have decided you want to build a career in technology.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That should make things easier, right?</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then you start researching.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Software engineering. Cybersecurity. Cloud computing. Data analytics. Artificial intelligence. DevOps. Product management. UI/UX design. Business analysis. Solutions architecture.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before long, a simple question — <em>“What should I do in tech?”</em> — becomes surprisingly difficult.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Social media rarely makes the decision easier.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One person tells you everyone should learn coding. Another says AI will replace programmers. Someone else says cybersecurity is the safest career. A creator promises that you can become a cloud engineer in three months.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The problem is that most of this advice answers the wrong question.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The question is not:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Which tech career is the best?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A much better question is:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Which tech career is the best fit for me, while still giving me meaningful opportunities in the market?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That distinction matters.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is no single best technology career for everyone. The career that suits someone who loves investigating problems may be completely different from the career that suits someone who enjoys designing products or working with customers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A useful way to make the decision is what I call the <strong>Career Clarity Formula</strong>:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Career Clarity = Passion × Strength × Opportunity</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You are looking for the point where three things meet:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Work you find interesting</li>



<li>Skills you can become good at</li>



<li>Problems organisations are willing to pay people to solve</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That is where career clarity begins.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Why Choosing a Tech Career Has Become So Confusing</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Technology has expanded far beyond programming.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Twenty years ago, saying you worked in technology might have immediately made people think of programmers, network administrators or IT support.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Today, the field is much broader.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can build software, protect systems, analyse data, manage cloud platforms, design digital products, improve user experiences, automate infrastructure, manage technology products or design complete enterprise systems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is good news because there are more ways to build a career.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But more choice also creates more confusion.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Beginners often respond by chasing whatever career is receiving the most attention.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One year it may be data science. The next year cybersecurity. Then cloud computing. Now artificial intelligence is attracting enormous attention.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Following trends without understanding yourself can lead to years of frustration.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You may spend six months learning a subject only to discover that you dislike the actual work.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That is why career selection needs to start with more than salary, job titles or hype.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Stop Asking Which Tech Career Pays the Most</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Money matters.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is nothing wrong with considering income when choosing a career.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The problem comes when salary becomes the <strong>only</strong> factor.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Imagine someone sees a video claiming cybersecurity professionals earn excellent salaries. They immediately start studying cybersecurity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A few months later, they realise the work involves a lot of investigation, monitoring, documentation, risk management and continuous learning about threats.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They hate all of it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The salary may still be attractive, but the daily work is a poor fit.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now consider someone else who is excellent at communication, organising people, understanding customers and making decisions. They might overlook product management because it does not sound as technical as software engineering.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yet product management could suit their natural abilities extremely well.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The lesson is simple:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Choose the work, not just the job title.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before deciding on a career, ask what people in that role actually do on a normal Tuesday afternoon.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That usually tells you more than the job title.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Career Clarity Formula</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Let us break the formula into three parts.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>1. Passion: What Kind of Work Do You Enjoy?</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Passion is often misunderstood.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You do not need to wake up one morning and discover that cybersecurity is your life purpose.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most people do not experience career decisions that way.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Interest often grows after exposure.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You try something, understand it better, become more competent and gradually start enjoying it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead of asking, <em>“What is my passion?”</em>, ask better questions:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Do I enjoy building things?</li>



<li>Do I like solving difficult problems?</li>



<li>Do I enjoy working with numbers and information?</li>



<li>Do I like finding out why something stopped working?</li>



<li>Do I enjoy protecting systems and spotting weaknesses?</li>



<li>Do I enjoy designing things people find easy to use?</li>



<li>Do I enjoy explaining complicated ideas?</li>



<li>Do I enjoy understanding how businesses work?</li>



<li>Do I prefer working deeply on technical problems or coordinating people?</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Suppose you enjoy taking things apart mentally and understanding how they work.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cloud engineering, infrastructure, networking or cybersecurity may interest you.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you enjoy creating things from nothing, software development might be worth exploring.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you enjoy asking questions such as <em>“What does this data tell us?”</em>, data analytics may be a stronger fit.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your goal is not to identify one perfect lifelong passion.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your goal is to find work that generates enough curiosity for you to keep learning.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2. Strength: What Could You Become Very Good At?</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The second part of the formula is strength.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Notice the wording: <strong>could become good at</strong>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You do not have to already possess every skill required for a career.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A beginner considering software engineering does not need to know how to code yet.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead, ask whether your strengths and learning style fit the work.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Technology careers reward different abilities.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some common strengths include:</p>

<li>Communication</li>



<li>Attention to detail</li>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Someone who enjoys structured problem solving may do well in software engineering.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Someone who is naturally suspicious of gaps and enjoys investigating problems may enjoy cybersecurity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Someone who can understand both business needs and technology may eventually fit roles such as business analysis, product management or solutions architecture.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Strengths also develop.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A person who starts with weak communication skills can improve them. Someone uncomfortable with mathematics can become competent through practice.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So instead of asking:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Am I already good enough?”</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ask:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>“Am I willing and able to develop the skills this career requires?”</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That is a far more useful question.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>3. Opportunity: What Does the Market Need?</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Passion and ability are important, but careers also exist within an economy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Someone must need the skills you are developing.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is where opportunity comes in.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Ask practical questions:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Are employers hiring people with these skills?</li>



<li>Which industries use them?</li>



<li>Is the field growing, stable or shrinking?</li>



<li>Can I work locally?</li>



<li>Can I work remotely?</li>



<li>Are international opportunities available?</li>



<li>Can the skill support consulting or freelancing later?</li>



<li>How is AI changing the role?</li>



<li>What additional skill would make me more valuable?</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is especially important for students who sometimes choose courses before checking what actual jobs require.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The strongest career direction is usually somewhere around:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>What I enjoy + what I can become good at + what organisations need</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Remove any one of those and problems can appear.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Passion without opportunity may become a hobby.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Opportunity without interest can lead to burnout.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Interest and opportunity without developing competence will not create a sustainable career.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You need all three.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">AI should influence <strong>how you prepare for your career</strong>, not necessarily stop you from entering a field.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Think about calculators.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Calculators did not eliminate mathematics.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They reduced the value of performing routine calculations manually.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">People still needed to understand what calculation to perform, whether the answer made sense and how to apply the result.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">AI is creating a similar shift across many technology jobs.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Consider software development.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A developer who only knows how to produce simple repetitive code may face more pressure as AI tools become better at generating that code.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But valuable software work includes much more than typing code.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Strong developers also need to:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">AI can help with those tasks, but the person still needs to understand what they are trying to achieve.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The same applies to data, cybersecurity, cloud computing, design and many other careers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your goal should therefore not be to find a career that AI will never touch.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That career may not exist.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A better goal is to become someone who knows how to use AI <strong>within a valuable area of expertise</strong>.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>A Stronger Career Formula: Skill + AI + Industry Knowledge</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another useful way to think about your future is:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your core skill is your main profession.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That is a much stronger basis for a decision.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Don&#8217;t Think Your Way Into Career Clarity — Test It</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can research careers for six months and still be confused.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At some point, you need to try the work.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you are considering software engineering, complete a basic programming course and build something small.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you are considering cybersecurity, learn networking fundamentals and complete a beginner security lab.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If cloud interests you, deploy a simple website to AWS or Azure and learn what servers, networking and storage actually do.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you are considering data analytics, find a public dataset and analyse it using Excel, SQL or Python.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If UI/UX attracts you, redesign a screen from an application you use and ask several people what they think.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A few hours of doing the work can teach you more about yourself than weeks of watching career videos.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Career clarity often comes from action, not research alone.</strong></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Build Fundamentals Before Chasing Trends</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Technology tools change constantly.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Foundations change much more slowly.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Think of building a house.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You would not start by choosing expensive windows while ignoring the foundation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Technology careers work the same way.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before becoming an AI engineer, you may need programming, databases, APIs, cloud knowledge and some mathematics.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before becoming a cloud engineer, you should understand networking, servers, Linux, storage and security.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Before going deep into cybersecurity, understand networks, operating systems, applications and identity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A tool may be popular today and replaced three years from now.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The underlying concepts usually remain useful.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>Tools change quickly. Fundamentals usually change slowly.</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That is why a strong foundation gives you career flexibility.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There is a common assumption many people make when starting a career in technology: if I complete my course, pass my exams, and get the certificate, I will be ready for the job market.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It sounds reasonable.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">After all, that is how education has traditionally worked. You go to school, attend classes, complete assignments, sit for exams, graduate, and then look for a job.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But technology does not quite work that way.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A computer science degree, IT diploma, bootcamp, online course, or professional certification can give you a strong foundation. It can introduce you to programming, databases, networking, systems, cloud computing, cybersecurity, and many other important concepts.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">What it cannot always give you is experience.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And in technology, experience matters.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Knowing Something Is Different From Being Able to Do It</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can understand how a database works without ever having built an application that uses one.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can learn about APIs in class without ever integrating two real systems.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can study cloud computing without ever deploying an application to the cloud.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can learn Git commands without ever working on a project where several people are changing the same codebase.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These are two different levels of learning.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One is understanding.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The other is application.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Both matter, but the second one is often what employers eventually want to see.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Think about learning how to drive.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You could spend several weeks reading about road signs, steering, braking, gears, mirrors and traffic rules. That knowledge is important.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But at some point, you have to sit in the driver&#8217;s seat.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first time you enter a busy road, things feel very different from what was described in the book.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Technology is similar.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The real learning often begins when you try to build something.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Job Market Expects More Than Coursework</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most technology jobs are not simply asking whether you have studied programming, cloud computing, networking or cybersecurity.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They are asking a different question:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><strong>What can you actually do?</strong></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A software engineering team may want someone who can take an idea, write the code, connect it to a database, troubleshoot errors, push it to GitHub and deploy it somewhere.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A cloud team may want someone who understands how applications are deployed, secured and monitored.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A cybersecurity role may require someone who can investigate vulnerabilities rather than simply explain what a vulnerability is.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A data role may require someone who can take messy information and turn it into something useful.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This is where many graduates experience their first major shock.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They may have spent years studying technology but still struggle when asked to build a simple real-world solution from beginning to end.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That does not necessarily mean their education failed them.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It means school was only one part of their preparation.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>School Gives You the Foundation</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is important not to dismiss formal learning.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some people hear conversations like this and conclude that university or college is unnecessary.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That misses the point.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Education provides structure.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It teaches important fundamentals that can sometimes be difficult to learn when you are only following random tutorials online.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You learn why things work, not just how to make them work.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You may study algorithms, operating systems, databases, networking, software engineering principles, mathematics or system design.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These ideas become extremely valuable as your career develops.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The problem comes when you assume the foundation is the finished building.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is not.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You still have to build on top of it.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>You Need to Build Things</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the best things a technology student can do is develop the habit of building projects outside coursework.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They do not have to be revolutionary.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You do not need to build the next Facebook.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Start small.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you are learning web development, build a personal website.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then build a simple expense tracker.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then create a small booking system.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then add authentication.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then connect it to a database.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Then deploy it online.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Every project introduces a new problem.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And every problem teaches you something.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You quickly discover that the code from a tutorial does not always work exactly as expected.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You encounter errors.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Libraries change.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Configurations break.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your database refuses to connect.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your application works on your laptop but stops working after deployment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You spend two hours trying to understand an error that eventually turns out to be one incorrect character.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It can be frustrating.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But this is also where you begin becoming a technology professional.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Learn How to Troubleshoot</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One of the biggest differences between classroom exercises and real technology work is uncertainty.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In an assignment, the problem is normally clearly defined.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You may be asked to create a particular program or solve a particular question.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At work, problems are not always presented that neatly.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Someone may simply say:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;The application is slow.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;The API is failing.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;Customers cannot log in.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;The deployment stopped working.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;The report has incorrect figures.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your job is often to investigate what is happening.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">There may not be an obvious answer.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You have to check logs, inspect configurations, test assumptions, search documentation, ask questions and eliminate possible causes.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">This ability to troubleshoot is one of the most valuable skills you can develop.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And you develop it largely by working on real things.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Your Portfolio Can Speak for You</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Imagine two students graduating from the same institution with similar grades.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The first student has completed all the coursework successfully.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The second student has done the same but also has a GitHub profile containing several projects.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They have built a website.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They have created an API.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They have deployed an application to the cloud.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They have written about some of the problems they encountered.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Maybe they have contributed to an open-source project or helped a local organization with a small system.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The difference becomes significant.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A portfolio gives an employer something concrete to discuss with you.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;I know Python.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can say:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;I used Python to build this application.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Instead of:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;I understand cloud computing.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can explain:</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">&#8220;I deployed this project and learned how to configure the environment.&#8221;</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">That makes conversations much more practical.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Technology Requires Intentionality</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A career in technology rarely develops automatically.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You have to be intentional.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">New tools appear.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Existing technologies change.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some skills become more valuable while others slowly disappear.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Artificial intelligence is changing how software is built.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cloud platforms continue evolving.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cybersecurity threats become more sophisticated.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you are in your first year, build something.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you are in your second year, improve it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">By the time you graduate, you want to have more than a certificate.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You want to have evidence that you have been practising your craft.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Internships Matter</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Internships can also play an important role in closing the gap between school and work.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Even a short internship exposes you to things that are difficult to reproduce in a classroom.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You begin seeing how teams operate.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You learn how meetings work.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You see how requirements are discussed.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You learn how code reviews happen.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You encounter deadlines.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You discover why documentation matters.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You interact with people from different roles.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Sometimes the biggest lesson from an internship is realizing that technology jobs involve much more than writing code.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Communication matters.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Teamwork matters.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Time management matters.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Understanding the business problem matters.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Knowing how your work affects customers matters.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These skills become increasingly important as you grow in your career.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Certifications Can Help, But They Are Not Enough Either</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Certifications are useful.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They can give your learning structure and help demonstrate that you understand a particular technology.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But certifications have the same limitation as schoolwork.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Passing an exam does not automatically mean you can implement something in a real environment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you are preparing for an AWS certification, for example, do not only memorize cloud concepts.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Create an AWS account.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Deploy something.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Configure permissions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Host a simple website.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Set up monitoring.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Make mistakes.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Practise explaining what you are building.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Write about your projects.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Document your decisions.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Present your work.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Teach someone else what you have learned.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These habits improve both your technical understanding and your ability to communicate.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Build a Personal Learning System</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">One useful approach is to think of your technology education as having three parts:</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your skills will expand naturally over time.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Your Career Starts Before Your First Job</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Many people think their technology career begins when they receive their first employment contract.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">In reality, it begins much earlier.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It begins when you start taking responsibility for your own learning.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It begins when you build your first project.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you encounter your first difficult technical problem.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you stay up trying to understand why your application refuses to work.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you publish something you built.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you learn a skill that was not part of your syllabus.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When you help someone else solve a technology problem.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Those experiences slowly build confidence.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And confidence in technology does not usually come from knowing every answer.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It comes from knowing that when you do not know the answer, you can figure it out.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>Final Thoughts</strong></h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">School is important.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Courses are important.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Certifications are important.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But none of them should be the end of your learning.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">If you want to build a strong career in technology, combine education with experience.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Learn the theory.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Practise the skills.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Build projects.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Look for internships.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Join communities.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Work with other people.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Create a portfolio.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stay curious.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And most importantly, take ownership of your growth.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The technology professionals who grow the fastest are not always the people who started out knowing the most.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Very often, they are the people who kept learning, kept building and kept showing up.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your school may give you the foundation.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But what you build on top of that foundation is largely up to you.</p>
